Allstar Charity Football Match

Sunday 3rd May 2009

The Jason Roberts Foundation held an All Star charity football match on Sunday 3rd May at Hayes and Yeading Football Club with the opposition being Jess Conrad's Showbiz XI.

The game was kicked off by a series of look-a-likes, including Sven Goran Erikson, and Norman Wisdom and an entertaining match saw the Jason Roberts side triumph 6-0.

The score wasn't a true reflection of the game as the Showbiz XI had many chances, including a retaken penalty which was saved by Paul Hyde, who won Man of the Match award. Mike McClean and Ewan Thomas continued to probe with Clive Walker and Barry Silkman trying to get them back in the game but the JRF team, which included former Hayes' favourites Cyrille Regis and Ricky Hill, DJ Spooney and athlete John Regis who ended with a couple of well-taken goals. Former Hayes' manager, Terry Brown, managed the JRF team which saw some of his former Hayes players star in the match.

Cyrille Regis said, 'It was great to be back after 21 years and grace the turf at Church Road. I have fond memories of playing here and learning my trade whilst combining my football with my electricians job before breaking into professional football. It was also great to see some old faces.'

Also in attendance were Premiership South African duo, Aaron Moekwena and Benny McCarthy, who mingled with the crowd and signed autographs and posed for pictures.

Jason Roberts added, 'What an emotional day for me coming back here. Non-league football gave me my grounding - I'm truly grateful to Hayes for giving me the opportunity to have a platform into professional football. Seeing some of the fans and my old teammates was unbelievable and the crowd were magnificent. I'd like to say a big thank you to Jess Conrad's Showbiz XI for participating in the event which I hope we do again next year.'

The event was well-attended and the Foundation was pleased that almost £2,000 was raised towards to the summer holiday programmes for young people.

Otis Roberts said, 'I'd like to thank Chris Ryan, Tony Perry and Derek Matthews and all the help behind the scenes and the DJs and entertainers for making it such a worthwhile event.'
