The Jason Roberts Foundation Lambeth Football League is a 6-a-side primary school football league which was founded in September 2006 by Laurence Hickmott; a Learning Mentor and Sports Coach at Stockwell Primary School. He decided to set up the league as his school football team were training hard every week but not getting the opportunity to play competitive matches against other schools. There were six schools in the league during the first season. At the beginning of 2007/08 season Laurence managed to expand the league to twelve teams with support from Keith Davidson, also from Stockwell Primary School and Junior Wright from Hill Mead Primary. The 2008/09 season got under way in October and the league now has 16 schools from Lambeth participating. During the summer of 2008 Laurence started working for the Jason Roberts Foundation and subsequently linked some ideas together with Otis Roberts from the foundation. One of those ideas was that from January the Jason Roberts Foundation will work together with Laurence with the aim to establish similar leagues across London, Brent, Lewisham and Westminster being the first three. Since the Jason Roberts Foundation started supporting the league there has been much more interest in the league across the borough of Lambeth. There have been articles in local newspapers such as the South London Press and Lambeth Life. This has reached other schools in the borough which now are very keen to join the league for the 2009/10 season which begins in September 2009. With continued support from Otis and the foundation the leagues will keep expanding. Once all the leagues are up and running (which will be by June 2009) Laurence will work with the Jason Roberts Foundation to organise inter-borough fun days, tournaments and leagues to encourage children and adults from schools in the various boroughs to travel to different areas of London to gain positive experiences through football. |
